Paul Bauman is Director, Tour Sound with the MUSIC GROUP Entertainment division and has over 30 years of professional audio and global touring industry experience, including key positions at a leading international concert sound rental firm and several respected loudspeaker system manufacturers.

Bauman graduated with a Master in Physics from University of Waterloo in 1985. As a member of the Audio Research Group, his thesis dealt with signal processing techniques for loudspeaker measurement and while working with industry legends, Drs. John Vanderkooy and Stanley Lipshitz, Bauman was introduced to digital recording and coincident stereo microphone techniques. As a Research Engineer at McMaster University, Bauman worked in the field of mm-wave antenna technology, leading to a Masters in Electrical Engineering. During this time, Bauman obtained album credits as recording engineer and bass player on numerous independent Canadian music projects techniques and was bit by the “big PA sound reinforcement bug”. Following this, Bauman joined Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden as guest researcher, working in the field of structural intensity measurements with interests in the areas of room acoustics modeling and auralization.

After leaving academia, Bauman was a founding partner and Director of Engineering for Adamson Systems Engineering (1991-94) and Director of R&D with the touring sound company Maryland Sound International (1994-98). After the experience of working with traditional loudspeaker array approaches to sound reinforcement, Bauman then had the unique opportunity of playing a key role in the industry-wide paradigm shift to the modern generation line array.

During his time at L-Acoustics (1998-2006), in addition to product development and technical support, Bauman was responsible for preset development and defining the tonal balance signature of V-DOSC, dV-DOSC and ARCS. New sound design techniques were developed to work with modern generation line array technology to meet challenges that many thought could only be addressed by traditional loudspeaker arrays. These pioneering sound design techniques were then used to develop training programs that have introduced many system engineers around the world into the concepts and techniques of how to work with line array technology.

While at JBL Professional from 2006-2016, Bauman was responsible for product conception, design, and technical support for the tour sound vertical market segment with specific focus on the VERTEC and VTX product lines. In addition to founding and developing training programs at L-Acoustics and JBL Professional, Bauman was also instrumental in the development of SoundVision 3D modeling and JBL HiQnet Performance Manager software. Bauman also pioneered the use of electronically delay steered (EDS) subwoofer arrays as well as the hybrid cardioid EDS subwoofer array concept.

Bauman has been active in sound design and system engineering for touring and special events with production credits including: San Diego Symphony Pops; George Strait; Global Citizen Festival; iHeart Festival; Linkin Park; Metallica; Rock in Rio, Brazil; Dream Concert, Korea; Peter Gabriel Growing Up Tour 2001-2003, Phil Collins First Final Farewell Tour 2004, Bob Dylan Europe 2005. He has also consulted on sound design for Mamma Mia (4 installations), Witches of Eastwick, Turandot Stade de France, Jean Michel Jarre, Nine Inch Nails, David Bowie, Neil Young, Radiohead, Bjork and Madonna, among others.

Fixed installation projects include: Staples Center, Microsoft Theater, Club NOVO, Hollywood Palladium, Hollywood Bowl, Wiltern Theater, Regal Cinema Stadium 14, Walt Disney Concert Hall, House of Blues Las Vegas, Ed Sullivan Theater – Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Valley Performing Arts Theater at CSUN, Disney Fantasyland Theater, T-Mobile Arena (Las Vegas), Neuehouse LA, Honda Center (Anaheim) and Radio City Music Hall. Specific House of Worship installation projects include: Lakewood Church (Houston), Yonsei Church and Sarang Church (Seoul, Korea).

Bauman has numerous patents and industry awards and has written technical papers for JAES, JSV, IEEE as well as articles for Live Sound, Professional Sound and Pro Sound News magazines. He was Toronto AES Section secretary for 4 years, secretary for the AES “Audio in Digital Times Conference”, workshop chairman for ”Design and Modeling of Linear Array Sound” (108th AES, Paris) and is a former member of the AES Technical Committee for Acoustics and Sound Reinforcement.
